Though Dad's retirement wasn't the main reason for our trip, we did purposely time our trip so we were able to attend his retirement party at Pebble Lake Golf Course. It was a big emotional day for my dad, but for the rest of us as well. I have never known my dad as anything other than a fireman since he started before any of us were born. 35 years is a long time to dedicate time and energy to something - anything - and my dad has done it with great grace, honor, and incredible work ethic. He is, was, and always will be my fireman dad. :)
The day was spent playing, garage saleing, and getting ready for the retirement party. Several extended family members made the trek from NoDak to be there for Dad as well. Though we weren't really able to spend lots of time chatting (not the reason they were there), it was an added bonus to see grandparents and such. The party consisted of a sloppy joe meal, lots of chatting with friends and firemen, and a small program which included a speech from fire chief Sparky Hovland, a few words from Mayor Hal Leland, and a very nice, very thoughtful, very well put-together and delivered speech from Dad. There were tears and laughter from all of us - not only at the party, but in the days leading up to and after the celebration. What an accomplishment!
Mom, Jill, Kathy and I worked for over two months on a retirement gift for Dad; a scrapbook of his career as a fireman including several stories, pictures, newspaper articles, memories, and letters from past and present firemen. It was a big joint effort and the finished product was fabulous. Dad was beyond grateful which made all the planning and work worth the time and energy. We also did a Shutterfly book of Dad's little fire crew (all 9 grandkids) at the fire station.
It was a great day spent celebrating Dad and all that he has done during his career as a fireman.
Grandma painted Alanna's fingernails and toenails for the party. So fancy!
Oh my goodness - matching dresses on these two girls! They look so pretty!
An attempt at a picture of our kids. 2/3 cooperated. I'll let you guess which one didn't.
Kids table at the party! I wish I would have been more insistent that the kids take different table; it was never my intent to let the kids overrun the table that was the closest to where Dad was going to be receiving his awards and giving his speech. I put my purse down there and somehow it was taken over by little people. My one regret. They're pretty cute though....
Alanna was having a fun time with Ronny.
Molly and Ryan bonded; she let him hold her for about 15 minutes or so!
Some of these last pictures are a bit out of order since they came from Jill's camera.
We were about three snaps in to our family picture when Gread-Grandma ushered Alanna over. They had been talking over towards the back of the room and Alanna was left out of the family picture. OOPS. Who is her mother and why wasn't she paying attention to her kids?!?
