Redwoods Farewell Tour - Day 1 Part 2

3-3-16
After several hours spent in the trees, we moved on to another one of our favorite spots; Enderts Beach. The 1/2 mile hike down the path to the beach is all part of the experience. We brought snacks, diapers, a blanket, an umbrella, and all the things we needed for an afternoon at the beach - except sunscreen. No one got sunburned, but I was trying to keep Hattie's hood on her or keep her under the umbrella while we were laying on the beach. March seems too early to get sunburned, but I would hate to find out the hard way that it is indeed possible to get burned! Matt, Charlie, Alanna, and Molly explored some tide pools. We found some really neat crab pots that had washed ashore in recent storms. Between playing tag with the waves and looking for treasures on the beach, the time just flies by. Look at all of that blue sky and blue water... we could have spent much more time there if it weren't for the fading daylight. We hiked back to the car and watched the sunset at the overlook by the parking lot. Watching the sun drop into the Pacific = so, so beautiful.

Oh my goodness. Precious baby Hattie!!! Hi, tiny baby with big cheeks!!

It is so hard to get a picture of Charlie's face when we're at the beach. He is constantly looking out at the water. The boy loves the beach.

Lovely sisters at the California coast!

Molly took it upon herself to cover up Daddy with one of Hattie's blankets and give him a kiss goodnight on the forehead. She left him alone for approximately 14 seconds before going back to play. :)

A timer picture on a rock. It's not so level, but it got us all in there!!

One last picture before heading up the trail. Sigh. We love, love, love this beach.

What's not to love?

I think this picture is so sweet. The look on Matt's face is adorable. So full and content after a day at the beach with our little (big!) family.

After watching the sunset, we picked up pizza from Little Ceasar's and headed to the hotel. The big kids and I went swimming after we ate. "Swimming" is a very loose term - it was more like a polar plunge!! The pool water was freezing! We tried to make it work but after 15 frigid minutes, we called it and headed for the hot tub to warm up. Matt was able to convince Charlie and Alanna to swim across the pool once, and if they did it, they would get a cookie back at the hotel room. They both managed to pull it off. Little did they know that they would have gotten a cookie regardless!

Redwoods Farewell Tour - Day 1 Part 1

March 3, 2016
Charlie had a long weekend in early March, and while we wanted to plan a campring trip for the whole weekend, the weather was less than cooperative. Matt monitored the weather closely and saw a small window of good weather for Thursday and part of Friday, so we jumped at the chance to get to the Redwoods. We stayed at the Best Western in Crescent City, a whole different experience from our usual camping spots at Jedediah Smith State Park! It worked out well for the time we had there. We hit the road early on Thursday (7:30!) and were at the Simpson-Reed Discovery Trail in Jedediah Smith State Park by 10:30. The trail was just shy of a mile and we sauntered down the path climbing on everything that could be climbed on. :) It was a beautiful blue sky, sunny day, perfect for exploring and spending the day outside. In case you forgot, we absolutely LOVE the Redwoods!! There is something about huge trees that is breathtaking and awesome.
