Some Firsts!

2/14/12
Our lil' valentine on her first valentine's day. Isn't her shirt perfect for the occasion? It's a hand-me-down from my friend Debbie. Alanna got this quilt from Grandma in the mail along with a My First Valentine's Day bib. Jean stitched Alanna's first and middle names, birthday, birth weight and height on the quilt. It's so sweet! I'm thrilled that she took the time to do it - for all the grandkids, not just our kids. Pretty special! This is the back of the quilt.

Charlie + Little People Lift the Flap books = hours upon hours of entertainment. I found this Christmas one on clearance at Kohl's for just over $2. He has another one that my mom found at a garage sale, bringing his collection up to 2. Seriously, he just loves those books!
2/12/12
Just playin' with his remote control car. This little boy brings such joy to my heart.
Now you see it, now you don't... because we sold the truck! Matt thought it was headed down the nickle and dime road, so he advertised it on Sunday afternoon and got a call about it that very night. That guy came to look at it during nap time the next day, brought his son back that evening to take one more look, and then bought it. Matt dropped off the truck on Tuesday morning and collected the money. Easy as that! So nice that we sold it before it needed some serious repairs. Matt's currently in the market for a new truck but is taking his time in finding something he wants and can afford. In the mean time, we're down to one vehicle. It's working out just fine!
This is Charlie's first rolly pancake experience! Rolly pancakes are a family recipe on my dad's side - and he truly is the rolly pancake master. They are crazy good even though there's nothing really special about the actual pancake. I think the most special part is that it's Dad's specialty, it was always a treat when he made them, and until my sisters and I pushed him into a corner about it, he never wrote down the recipe. Now, it's safely tucked away in my recipe box to pull out and pass down to Charlie and Alanna. Charlie's giving his rolly pancake a pretty good inspection...
...before deciding that it's acceptable and taking a bite. Super yum.

A sweet snuggly moment just after Charlie woke up from his nap. Love him so much!

Subject line: I GOT THIS.
I offered to have my friend Debbie's second youngest (Logan, 2) over for the day so she could get caught up on some things at home or just spend extra time snuggling her 6-week-old son. Looks like I got this, right? 3 kids, all happy at the same time. Ah, the beauty of pictures. Shortly after this, Alanna wanted to be held, Charlie was too busy watching Logan to finish eating, and Logan tossed his yogurt cup on the (carpeted) floor, sending waves of cherry vanilla all over the kitchen (cupboards, dishwasher, floor, etc.). Drat! After some crying and what can only be described as ferocious wiping with the washrag, we were back in business. Logan and Charlie don't really play together, but they make an attempt at it by pushing each other around while periodically taking each other's toys. Logan is actually 2 1/4, but he's a bit shorter and a few pounds lighter than Charlie, making him seem younger than he actually is. He says about the same amount of words as Charlie - next to none. :) It was a tiring day, but worth it!

Just an Ordinary Day

2/8/12
Posing for her 14-week picture and looking oh-so-cute in the process.
Charlie really digs on these bristle blocks! He brings them over and holds them up (his way of asking us to open the container), dumps every last piece out, and then gets started building something. We have lots of sets of blocks to build with - a pain to clean up, but soooo worth it. I love the creativity and open-endedness of these kind of toys!

Along with the jungle hopper, we busted out the Bumbo seat and Charlie was quick to give it a try. I think Charlie likes it more now than he did when he was a tiny baby! Alanna has done a few short stints in it and does ok. It definitely depends on her mood. I put her in it one night and she wasn't having it, but I guess she sat nicely in the Bumbo while Matt was doing dishes one morning (whileIwassleepingin:). I'm sure she'll like it more and more.

ALANNA

Alanna @ 3 1/2 months (16 weeks):
- smiles a ton
- giggles and just started really laughing two days ago
- weighs 11 pounds 10 ounces (at 15 weeks)
- sleeps from 9-5:30am, 6-8/9am
- is almost out of her 3 month clothes (depending on the outfit of course)
- has only spit up 2 times in her entire life (and one of them was on Matt) (no joke - 2 times)
- doesn't drool, but bubbles on her lips are a frequent accessory
- loves looking into my eyes
- does tummy time pretty well, and unlike Charlie, she actually knows that she can put her head down and rest for a minute before picking it up again
- rolls from her belly to her back
- still likes to be swaddled at bedtime and afternoon naptime, though I had to switch her to a knit swaddler rather than a flannel swaddler (only just yesterday)
- still has her white spot
- likes to be held looking out or up on my shoulder
- tracks her brother around the room near constantly
- can hold onto toys (not all the time, and she definitely can't pick them up yet)
- is such a sweet, joyful little girl!

February 6 - All in a Day's Work

Remember that huge jumper we got from one of Matt's coworkers in Meeker? Ugh. It is SO. BIG. It seriously takes up some precious real estate in our living room. Thankfully, it comes apart and can be stored in pieces in a big box, where it has been for the last several months. Well, it made an appearance in our house shortly after we got back from Albuquerque, and this was Alanna's first time in the jungle hopper! It really is fun for babies with all the bouncing, singing, and rattling toys, so I just can't say no to it! Plus, it gives the back of Alanna's head a much-needed break. She barely peeks out the top, but she enjoys spending small amounts of time in the hopper. With all the bells and whistles it has, you'd think she would be enthralled with it, but what does she do instead? Watch her big brother. :)

Her big brother wasn't doing a whole lot on this particular day - fever of 102! It started Sunday evening and broke Tuesday morning, staying for a thankfully quick visit. He stayed in this position on the couch for 1 hour and 45 minutes. Definitely not typical of Charlie (or any 22-month-old for that matter).
This picture was taken about 10 minutes after Charlie got done with breakfast. We played trains for about 3 minutes and then Alanna woke up. When I went to get her, Charlie went to get his blankets. When I came back, this is what I saw. He obviously felt poorly. He just laid there for a while, wanting to play with his trains but didn't have enough energy to do it. (This is the position I find him in frequently when I cover him up at night - his tiny butt in the air!)

CHARLIE

Charlie @ 23 months:
- says (and knows what they mean) car and yeah
- will repeat baby and daddy, but doesn't say them unprompted or in the right context
- is having a fetish with trains lately
- makes a siren sound whenever he sees, hears, or plays with firetrucks
- loves his Eency Weency Spider book
- sorts and stacks the shapes on the pegboard (triangles together, squares together)
- still isn't a meat fan though he will eat tuna melts and sometimes crescent chicken squares
- eats fruit like it's candy
- has had 3 haircuts
- has both 2-year bottom molars
- wears a size 5 shoe and a size 4 diaper
- is on the tail end of a screaming phase (not screamed for a handful of days - thankfully!)
- gives kisses on the mouth pretty freely to mom, dad, and Alanna
- goes to bed at 8 and sleeps until 8ish

Santa Fe

On Saturday, we stopped at the Santa Fe Railyard and it was definitely worth the stop! There was a flea market in one building and a farmers market in another. How people were growing and selling vegetables at the beginning of February, I have no idea.
I took Charlie swimming for a bit before we checked out of the hotel. The water was decently warm, but the air temperature in the pool room was probably in the upper 60's - brr! We took a quick dip in the hot tub before heading up to the room.
On Friday night, Matt took Charlie swimming while Alanna and I headed to Kohl's for a quick shopping trip. Matt looks pretty chipper considering his fever was at least 101 in this picture. What a trooper!
Can't even wait until the floatie hits the water, he was that excited!
This is the capitol building in Santa Fe. The whole thing was round. It was very modern, a quality that capitol buildings don't usually posess. It wasn't so very kid-friendly, but then why would it need to be? I think this is one of maybe three family pictures we took while in NM.
This is the duck pond on the University of New Mexico's campus. Matt and Charlie had fun feeding the ducks Wheat Thins. :S We got coffee in the student union and enjoyed checking out campus. I definitely don't miss college life! I was acutely aware of my blonde hair and two small children while we were walking around. Not a whole lot of families out for a stroll on a Friday morning!
This is Alanna's make-shift 13 week photo!
While playing at one of the malls, Charlie found this cute little ice cream truck. He didn't get to ride it because I didn't have any quarters. Drat! Oh well. I bet he liked it better stationary anyway.
Speaking of rides, we visited two ABQ malls and both of them had indoor carousels. Matt took Charlie at the first mall and I took him the next. Both times he wasn't too sure of the ride. It's been a while since he rode the carousel at the Gorge (since it's closed up for winter), but he didn't like it back then so I'm not sure why I thought he would like it now. Good try, though!
And that's it! It was a busy, exhausting week, but I'm glad we made the effort to go along with Matt. It was a great way to get to see Albuquerque even though Matt mostly saw the inside of the conference room. :( I wonder if Matt will have another training next winter...?? (Fall '10 was Roseburg, OR, remember?)
