So IL

Last weekend was a treat - time in Southern Illinois with friends! FRIENDS! We still have them... they're just out there, a thousand miles away. :) We flew into St. Louis on Thursday and came home on Monday. Figured we'd take advantage of the holiday weekend! (For those of you who make fun of federal government employees and groan because of their days off, I know that deep down inside, you're all just jealous. Admit it.) Our bff's were gracious enough to host us and we just had a blast staying up late talking, playing games and goofing off. We got to see lots of other friends, attend church at Vine, walk to the park, have coffee at Common Grounds (my former place of employment), and spent lots of time playing. My bff and I got to go out by ourselves - twice! - to shop and get dessert. Even Matt and I snuck away for a date one afternoon while Charlie was napping! It was fun to be there, but both Matt and I felt like we never lived there. Sure, our friends are there (not all - our other bffs are now in TN!), but it didn't really feel like we ever LIVED there. Maybe it's because we've been back in CO for longer than we were ever in SoIL. Who knows! Just for old time's sake, we did drive past our old apartment. It was the same!

While we were there, my bff took some family pictures of us with coordinating outfits and the whole works. It was fun! She got some great pics despite the fact that Charlie was pretty serious during the photo shoot. Maybe he was pretending that he was sitting for an oil painting. :) Anyway, I like how they turned out!!

Oh! On a side note, this was the first time EVER that Charlie has worn jeans. I don't put him in jeans and don't plan to again at least until he can walk. Why subject my little guy to the discomfort of denim? He has plenty of time to wear jeans down the road! Doesn't he look so much older though? Ugh!

Guess What's New?

Crash!!

Go ahead and laugh! We sure did. Charlie didn't get hurt at all and didn't cry, so that makes it ok to laugh. :) I love how the push toy rolls, though. They should advertise that on the box - may roll easily if involved in an accident.

Picture MishMash

Charlie's learning about facial expressions. Matt and I call him Captain Scrunchieface.
Funny! We were at the park eating ice cream (on Jan. 28th!) and enjoying the beautiful weather, but as it turns out, Charlie didn't appreciate the grass so much. He just sat. Every so often, he'd tentatively touch the grass with a finger and then quickly pull his hands up. We just sat at the park again two days ago (2/15) and he just sat. No crawling, no nothing. He did touch the grass a little more, but that was it. Hopefully he gets over it because I have big plans for us to hit the park almost everyday this summer!
Said ice cream.
A hike a Deer Haven (where Matt went elk hunting). Appropriately named, since Matt only saw deer the whole season. Thus, our freezer is sadly empty. But check out our new backpack! Charlie does really well in it (not surprising since he did well in the BabyBjorn, too). Comfy, practical, extra storage, and stylish with the aqua and brown colors! Thanks, REI Outlet!

The strange sleeping positions have begun. I watched him once sit up, fling his body around and flop back down, all while still sleeping. Hmm. Maybe I should try that. I'm not so sure Matt would appreciate me thrashing around at night, though.
Slippers!!
The backpack (and beard!) out on Tunnel Drive. It's a fun, almost 4-mile hike super close to town.
Macaroni and cheese. Delish.

See my hammer, Daddy? Want me to show you how it works ON YOUR FACE?
Isn't this a cute little workbench? It plays such catchy songs!
He looks pretty serious about something, here. Probably "talking" about his tools. I just love the picture because I think it's so sweet when he sits up on his knees!!!
Dishwasher love.

Makin' eyes at Daddy.
My kitchen towel has a new place - the floor. I hang it up, Charlie pulls it down. I hang it up, Charlie pulls it down. Repeat, repeat, repeat.
Toys!
Just before he turned 10 months, Charlie figured out how to pull himself up in the crib! Sitting, rolling, standing... the only thing left is jumping. Our son does love to jump, but he hasn't figured out that he can hang on to the railing and jump up and down yet. Give it time!
Showing off his skills.

10 1/2 months

Uff-da! I'm SO behind in pictures! Seems like that's the story of my life... I have such a hard time keeping my pictures organized. I think I'm about 8.3 years behind. Gulp!

Anyway! Here's a pic of Charlie with his bear (our Friday picture ritual). I know I've posted pics of him in the past with his bear and it's fun to see how much he's grown. This was on 2/4/11.
Charlie LOVES his walker/push toy that he got from Grandma and Grandpa (Legge). He can pull himself up to a standing position and then just takes off (started at 10 months). It's adorable! I seriously love watching his little butt sway as he walks. He will walk with Matt and me if we're holding onto his hands, but it has to be both hands. If he's not holding onto both of our hands, he won't walk. He just drops down to one knee. We've been trying to help him walk between us - even for just one step! - but he's not that interested yet. I like that Charlie must be a little cautious in hopes that he doesn't end up jumping off the kitchen table or climbing the cupboards or something.

He pulls himself up to everything now and has been for a while (since 9 1/2 months). He did it a few times while we were in Fergus for Christmas, but it's nonstop now. Walls, patio doors, couches, piano bench, desk, etc. Everything. I used to be able to put stuff on the couch that I didn't want him to get at but no more! Plus, his arms are getting longer, so I really have to push things way up if I want to keep them safe. It's so sweet to be sitting at the kitchen table and see these little fingers gripping onto the edge of the table!

From Charlie's 10th to 11th month, I really have noticed him transition from a baby to a soon-to-be toddler. I put his infant seat away and he's now in a (rear-facing) regular car seat. He's not eating baby food anymore and has moved on to more advanced stuff. This week, he had mashed potatoes with salmon and all kinds of veggies, and black beans, brown rice and cream style corn. He's had peanut butter sandwiches and pancakes (Grandma's buttermilk pancakes AND Matt's chocolate chip pancakes!), cantalope, tuna, lasagna, steel-cut oatmeal, chex and rice krispie cereals, and his latest favorite, couscous! He still eats the baby standards (yogurt, applesauce) but has definitely moved past the purees. He has finally gotten the sippy cup down, after about 2-3 months of trying to figure that stupid thing out. Though it's fun, it's a little sad to see him moving out of the baby phase! Do all moms feel that way? Bittersweet? I was so bummed when Charlie had to move onto the next size of shoe and I had to put his leather football ones away... but then I saw the cute little puppy dogs on the next size and cheered right up.

Charlie also started getting into my kitchen cupboards and just yesterday put one of his weebles right next to the brown sugar. Maybe he thought since I can't have that right now maybe you can! Either way, Mr. Drummer Boy was happily perched with his face into the sugar.

We have one step in the house and Charlie can now go up and down it. He goes down face-first, which involved a handful of tumbles in the beginning. He puts one hand down, then the other and then walks himself so his legs scoot off the step. Sometimes he still falls, but he doesn't cry anymore. He just rolls over and keeps on truckin'! Charlie LOVES to watch us load the dishwasher and will stand up by the door when it's open. He's like a magnet to that thing - just hearing the sound of the door opening brings him over. I'm hoping that the fascination continues into his teenage years. :) Another thing that Charlie comes cruising over for? Daddy making coffee. Charlie sits on the floor with his head tipped waaay back so he can see what Daddy's doing. Every time.

As far as tricks go, he still doesn't pattycake or do "so big!" He can wave and nod his head yes, but I'm not sure that he knows what he's doing when he nods. He will sit and read books for about 2.5 minutes, so you better be a fast reader. And getting him to sit still in your lap? Good luck. He's way too busy for that. I can read books to Charlie if he's sitting in front of me, facing me (while I read upside down). Other than that? He's content to play by himself with his toys or whatever is within reach. Why are kids attracted to shoes and garbage - the nastiest things in the house? Ugh. A few weeks ago, Matt put up the swing that Charlie got from Grandma and Grandpa (Rustand) and we have been out a handful of times enjoying the swing. Charlie's face lights up! We've been having such great weather so it's fun to get outside.

So much more to say, but I better quit. We're traveling to Illinois today (YAY!) for a long weekend with some friends. Another airplane ride for Charlie! This will be his 8th (MO) and 9th (IL) states in his 11 months of life... Whoa! All my bags are (just about) packed, I'm (nearly) ready to go....

The downside of January?!

Wow... it's almost February! It felt like this month just flew by. Probably because it did! Charlie and I didn't get home from our Christmas MN trip until the 9th, and poor Matt had to drive in terrible weather to pick us up from the airport. What was supposed to be a 2+ hour drive turned into a 5+ hour drive. Yuck. After getting back, it took a whole week to get the house back in order and everything unpacked from being gone so long! Christmas decorations were put away and the house finally got back in order a mere 6 days later. Ugh! Matt went on a hunting trip and came back to a sickly wife. I thought I had strep, so I went in for a culture, but no luck. Turns out it was tonsillitis! (Why didn't I get that as a kid instead of now?!) It took a week to recover from that nastiness. Thankfully, Matt stayed home three days to help with Charlie as I was flat on my back on the couch. Combine all that and we're knocking on February's door!

I'm trying to upload pictures as I've got some cute ones of Charlie, but it's not working. I'll have to try again later. Just picture Charlie, pulling himself up on the couch (and everywhere else), playing with toys while wearing these adorable slippers I got at Target. C.U.T.E.

More soon!

Kansas Pheasant Hunting, January 14-16

Went out pheasant hunting in Kansas with a couple of co-workers and one retiree. Safe to say I was the youngest on the trip by 20 years. Had a really good time, but weather was nice and the birds were running. On Friday, we hunted a half day and one guy shot one bird, but as a group we should of had three more. On Saturday I was the lucky one. I had four roosters get up in front of me throughout the day, and was able to get all four; another guy was able to get one more. On Sunday, the luck shifted to a different guy, and he shot all three we got that day. Here's a couple pictures with the birds I shot and my company.
The beard is back for another year. I have two more weeks before I shave it off; Julie can't wait.
From left to right, Dave Gilbert, Tom Grette, and Fran Ackley (the yellow lab is Dave's named Rufus, and the black is Fran's, Sidney).

This was my last hunting trip now until spring turkey opens up, but I had a good year. I'll be looking forward to next year's hunting seasons.
